Koueintu Pétro ATTITI (1935 - 1963)

Petro AttitiSeptième enfant d’une famille de huit, Pétro fils de Jérémy ATTITI et d’Alphonsine TARA, originaire d’Unia, est né le 20 JUIN 1935 à la tribu de Goro au sud de Yaté sur la Grande Terre.

En 1940, Pétro est confié à cinq ans avec son frère Noël aux religieuses de l ’institution Saint Tarcissius à Canala. Internes, ces enfants étaient conduits une fois l ’an de Goro à Canala en pirogue par leurs parents. Ils termineront l’école primaire au séminaire de Saint Léon à Païta.

C’est en 1960 que Pétro obtient le Baccalauréat au lycée La Pérouse après avoir passé trois ans au collège du Sacré Cœur à Nouméa. Il obtient une bourse grâce à l’intervention du Directeur du Sacré Cœur et il opte pour des études de droit à la faculté ASSAS à Paris où il obtient un diplôme en 1963. Il est l ’un des tout premiers étudiants mélanésiens a être diplômé en droit.

Président des étudiants calédoniens, Pétro accueille en France tant les étudiants que les calédoniens de passage. Participant également au journal universitaire des étudiants des DOM-TOM, il se crée de nombreuses amitiés.

Si ses frères aident au financement de ses voyages en Métropole, Pétro décide de travailler pendant ses vacances d ’été 1963 afin d’assumer seul les frais de son retour définitif en Nouvelle-Calédonie.

Excellent plongeur, engagé comme moniteur de plongé au Club Méditerranée, il va exercer son activité au Maroc. Mais c’est le premier août 1963, lors de sa première sortie sous-marine au large de l ’île ALOCEMIA qu ’il disparaît à la suite d’un accident dû à un malaise. Il est alors âgé de 28 ans.

Son corps sera ramené à bord du paquebot « Mélanésien » et inhumé à Goro. C’est le 1er AVRIL 1980 que le Lycée Professionnel de la Rivière salée pris le nom de « Lycée Professionnel Pétro ATTITI ».

Seventh child of a family of 8, Petro was Jérémy ATTITI and Alphonsine TARA’s son, from the UNIA tribe. He was born in June, 20th 1935 in the GORO tribe of South of YATE, on the Main Island of New-Caledonia.

In 1940, when Petro was 5, he and his brother Noël were placed and educated with the Nuns of Saint-Tarcissius Institution in CANALA. Cut off from their family in that boarding school, those children were taken by their parents once a year, from GORO to CANALA in an outrigger canoe. They finished Primary school in Saint-Léon Seminary in PAÏTA.

In 1960, after studying for 3 years in Sacré-Coeur’s Junior School in NOUMEA, Petro obtained his High School Diploma in “La Pérouse” High School. Thanks to the Sacré-Coeur’s Headmaster’s intervention, he was granted a scholarship. Then he started studying Law in ASSAS University in PARIS where he got a diploma in 1963. He was one of the first Melanesian students to be qualified in Law studies.

In France, as the Representative of New-Caledonia’s students Association, Petro welcomed equally students and New-Caledonian visitors. Taking part in the Overseas Students University textbook, he formed and enjoyed many close friendships. While his brothers helped him to finance his trips to France, Petro started a summer job during his holidays in 1963 to pay for his definitive return to New-Caledonia. Proficient scuba diver, he was hired as a scuba diving instructor by the CLUB MED where he was going to work in MORROCCO. Unfortunately, in August, 1st 1963, on his first diving expedition a few miles from AL HOCEIMA island, he was overcome by a sudden attack. He passed away at the age of 28.

His body was brought back on the liner “ THE MELANESIAN ” and buried in GORO. On April, 1st 1980, “Rivière Salée” Technical High School took the name of “ PETRO ATTITI TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL”.
